Suggestions for UU’re Home Hosts

  1. Descriptions should be as current as possible. If they haven’t been changed for several years, maybe it’s time for an update; please remember to notify us if you change your e-mail address.
  2. If guestrooms are located in areas other than the main or second floor, that should be noted.
  3. Accommodations must be CLEAN! If towels aren’t changed daily, the owner should explain the system to arriving guests.
  4. If bathrooms are shared, they should be uncluttered, with ample space for guests’ toiletries (at least while they’re using them).
  5. Guestrooms should be uncluttered, with space for luggage, and closet space with hangers.
  6. Useful amenities include drinking glasses or paper cups, Kleenex (in bedroom and bathroom), hand lotion, clock, radio, good lighting, and fans if the room isn’t air-conditioned.
  7. Hosts should take a good look at the room(s) they’re renting. Do they need a coat of paint, or new wallpaper? Are curtains, bedspread, doilies, etc. faded, or worse yet, dusty?
  8. Talk about breakfast… food allergies, preferred hot beverages, time, etc. If unhosted, be sure guests will be able to find what they need. If at all possible, join your guests for breakfast. It’s fun, and guests are appreciative. Guests feel uncomfortable when they are the only guests and host(s) stay in the kitchen!
  9. Explain about areas in the house where guests are welcome.

A good idea might be to identify a set of house rules that we can include with the listing so that everyone coming in to your home knows what to expect. Below is an example (from Brookline, Mass.).

House Rules

Your per-night fee covers use of a bedroom/bathroom and a light breakfast of cereal, fruit, juice, coffee or tea. If you prefer to bring your own specific breakfast items, we are within several blocks of a Whole Foods store and a Star Market grocery store where you may make purchases. These items may be stored in the dining room or in the kitchen refrigerator for use at breakfast.

It is assumed that all other meals will be taken elsewhere. There are many restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops within walking distance of the house. The kitchen is not available for meal preparation.

No food or drinks other than water are permitted upstairs.

The dining room / living room area may be used at times other than breakfast for reading, drinking beverages, light snacking, etc. On weekdays the area is also used by piano students waiting for lessons or parents waiting for students.

The dining room / living room area is not available for entertaining visitors. You may, however, invite others to come into the living room as a meeting place on your way out for other activities. Visitors are not allowed beyond the first floor.
