Some time ago you suggested that I might refer to you any exceptional young man who has an interest in the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have such a man in, 1 mind who is to graduate this June. e one I desire to present for your consideration is Mr. Richer ixon, one of the finest young men, both in character and ability, that I have ever had the opportunity of having in my classes. He is a very superior student, alert, aggressive, a fine speaker and one who can do an exceptionally good piece of research.work when called on to do 90. Applicant Was born January 9, 1913 at Yorba Linda, California; ' He‘is
single and resides with his parents. His father is a grocer. He has two brothers who are students. He has never been arrested or involved in any kind of trouble, nor-have any members of his family. He takes an occasional social drink of liquor. He typewrites poorly with the touch system. He has had no training or experience with firearms-

the latter school\in 1930, thereafter entering, the Whittle College where
he was awarded an‘ is Degree in 1934, having majored in hiszgrz. He then
enrolled in the lav: school at Duke University, receiving an .3 Degree
in June, 1937. He plans to take the California Bar examination commencing
on September '7, 1937 .
Applic ant's Chi-3- employment during his spare time from his studies and during his :vacations has been with his father who operates a grocery store.
He claims, however, that in the summer of 1931 he worked 1’. time for
the Whittier College, interviewing prospective students. This work was done under the supervi sion of the Acting President at that time, a Dr.
Herbert Harris. ?e claims that in the Sumers of 1932 and 1933 he rented
from his father 'a gasoline filling station at 2706 East Whittier Blvd. , _
which he operated on his own account, doing business with the Richfield Oil Products —Co. In the Sznuners of 1934 and 1935 he assisted hisfather
in the latter's grocery store. During the school year of 1935 and
Summer of 1936 worked as assistant in the law library at Duke Uni- versity. Also during the school year or 1936 and 1937‘h'e did research work for the Dean of the Law School. He mentioned that at the time
he was awarded his Degree at he he was elected to membership in the
Order of 0011‘, Honorary Legal Fraternity. He also mentioned that W
made the football squad at "nittier, playing on it for four years did
not receive a letter. .

The applicant learned of this Bureau through a talk made by SAC J. A. Smith at Duke University. He is not acquainted with any Special Agents of the
Bureau nor employee of the Department of Justice. '

The results of the fictitious interview given to Applicant are at-
tached hereto. Special Agent 3’. G. Ross, who was used for this
purpose, advised that ag'rplicant made a very good appearance, appeared
to be confident and thorough, commensurate-with his inexperience; add-
ing that he reported the information obtained correctly. The appli-
cant also dictated satisfactorily.
The applicant is being recommended. It is believed that he is above average in intelligence and mental alertness. He appears to be
possessed of sufficient force and aggressiveness; also of good, common
ordinary sense. expresses his thoughts well and uses good English. He is manly appearing, possessing a good physique, and it is felt that
he c0uld successfully contact persons of all walks of life and that he
would inspire confidence.
This is to certify that forty minutes were spent in the interview with this applicant and that the examination and interview were given to
him personally by the interviewing official.
